PRIMARY and secondary school students in Glenorchy are being given a wide range of cultural experiences through the Glenorchy City Council Living in Harmony ‘Diversity: We Are Who We Are’ project.
Project manager Julian Northmore says the project aims to build connections, trust and harmony in the community.
“The project is funded through the Commonwealth Living in Harmony program and involves students from three secondary schools and two primary schools, people from culturally diverse communities, in-schools presenters, Police Tasmania and Metro public transport,” he said.
“Following in-school presentations, students from each school will experience cultural foods, music and traditions through visiting established cultural organizations and clubs, as well as getting together at food and music events provided by people from newly-arrived communities.
The project aims to:

  • Bring people together to learn more about each other

  • Offer people from diverse backgrounds opportunities to participate in mentoring and role-modeling with the broader community

  • Generate new understanding and empathy with cultural differences and similarities

  • Foster the development of new and ongoing relationships between cultures and generations

“The project will then culminate with an extensive refugee/migrant poster campaign on and in Metro buses throughout the Glenorchy and Hobart metropolitan areas,” Julian said.
“The eye-catching posters, designed by community artist and photographer Lucia Rossi, will draw on photographs and imagery compiled from the get-togethers of students and communities.”
