Last week, Council’s 2023 Glenorchy Community and Volunteer Awards were held at MyState Bank Arena. Over the next few weeks, we will be shining a light on some of the accomplishments of the fantastic individuals who won these awards.
The 2023 Sports Person of the Year award was won by Arielle Cannell, who attends Mt Carmel College and is in Grade 9.
Arielle is currently ranked no. 1 in Australia for both U16 and U18 Hammer Throw. Arielle has also achieved an Australian U16 no. 2 ranking in Discuss. Arielle’s talents have not just been confined to within Australian borders, with Arielle also achieving world rankings for her talents in Hammer Throw. This is an outstanding achievement for a 15-year-old.
Since 2021, she has competed in the Australian National Championships and received a gold medal in Hammer Throw in her age group and the age group above her, with a bronze medal for Discuss. She trains 3 to 4 times a week, competing in many competitions regularly such as Little Athletics, School Sports Australia and Australian National Championships.
She is on track to achieve her goal of competing in the 2032 Olympics.
