Glenorchy City Council Acting-Mayor Sue Hickey today welcomed State Government intervention to ensure an after-hours GP service in Derwent Park continued.
Ald. Hickey said she was pleased Health Minister Guy Barnett had acted following the news the After Hours Doctor was closing on 31 May.
Minister Barnett understood my concerns about the loss of this service and the impacts that would have on people in Glenorchy who already struggle with poor health outcomes and accessing adequate medical support.
“I am pleased the Minister listened to those concerns and took action to ensure another practice will provide after-hours GP care.
“Having two urgent care clinics providing after hours care in the middle of Hobart is all well and good, but if someone is sick and simply can’t get that far to see a GP, it will only increase the strain on our ambulance service and hospital emergency department.
“The Glenorchy City Council welcomes the State Government’s intervention to continue providing after hours GP care in our city,” Ald. Hickey said.
