Glenorchy City Council to Revamp Cycling Infrastructure, Promising Safer and Greener Commutes

Glenorchy City Council is continuing to upgrade infrastructure across the region, to provide more transport alternatives for the community and to encourage people to get out and about in a healthy and sustainable way.

Planning is underway for a new shared pathway link along Main Road, from the new Bridgewater Bridge to the existing footpath near Akamas Drive, Granton.

These works have been made possible with the support of the Better Active Transport in Greater Hobart grant program. Council received $250,000 for the works from the grant scheme, while providing another $250,000 to finish construction.

Glenorchy City Council will be working with Andrew Walter Construction to carry out works on the cycleway.

Contractors will be building a 2.5 metre wide shared pathway alongside Main Road, designated for use by both pedestrians and bike riders.

In addition to the pathway, the kerb and gutter on the eastern side of road will be rebuilt. Council will improve the road alignment, while providing nearby bus stop areas and indented parking.

While there will be some restrictions to traffic and property access during the works, Council will minimise the impact to residents during construction.

This shared pathway is expected to improve safety for both cyclists and motorists. Boosting cycling facilities in our region will also reduce road congestion and air pollution in our region.

Not only does cycling cut down on fuel use and fuel cost, but it also offers commuters the added benefit of exercise on safer amenities.

Mayor Sue Hickey says these shared pathways provide a designated space for cyclists to ride, and pedestrians to walk safely.

“Keeping pedestrians and cyclists separate from vehicles, ultimately helps reduce the risk of injuries caused by crashes and improve safety for both cyclists and drivers”.

The first stage of works near Akamas Drive is expected to start in the coming months and will likely take six months to complete, following stage of the project will be completed over the coming financial years.
