Pool funding call welcomed

Glenorchy Mayor Sue Hickey today welcomed Clark Independent MHR Andrew Wilkie’s call for Federal Government funding for the redevelopment of the Glenorchy War Memorial Pool.

Mayor Hickey said she looked forward to briefing Mr Wilkie on the Council’s efforts to compile a business case for funding now that the preferred option for the pool was decided.

“Following extensive consultation with the community on the preferred options, we are now moving forward with a final option which we will develop a business case for funding.

“Council has always understood the cost of redeveloping this facility as a pool which meets contemporary standards and guidelines would be outside the capacity of Glenorchy ratepayers to pay for it.

“As such, it was always our intention to seek funding from other government tiers which traditionally fund this type of public infrastructure.”

Mayor Hickey said she would be seeking a meeting with Mr Wilkie as a matter of priority.

She said Council’s immediate focus was to get on with the restoration of the existing pool.

“With $5 million provided by the State Government at the last election, we will be able to repair the existing pool and have it reopened to the public. This means Glenorchy will have a usable asset while we undertake the long-term work required to secure a major redevelopment,” Mayor Hickey said.
