Glenorchy City Council becomes Australia’s first “b kinder” council

Glenorchy City Council has become the first “b kinder” council in Australia after a decision at Monday’s Council meeting.

This follows Council’s participation in b kinder day earlier this year and the integration of the b kinder program into Council’s childcare facilities.

The b kinder foundation was established in honour of 12-year-old Billie Kinder, who died in a tragic accident in 2016.  With a play on her name (b kinder) the foundation was set up to empower and inspire others.

Billie’s mother, CEO and founder of the b kinder foundation Danny Mayson-Kinder said she was excited to have Glenorchy City Council sign up as the first b kinder council.

“b kinder’s resources have been proven to give children a set of skills to help them to become kinder, more empathetic and compassionate.  Kindness saves lives and it has never been more crucial to the mental health of our communities,” she said.

“To have b kinder councils building on our b kinder school initiative is wonderful and acknowledges that role modelling kind leadership is paramount to making a difference.

“It will be wonderful to work with Glenorchy City Council who have such a strong, clear vision and we can’t wait to see the substantial impact they make in their community.

“We are delighted to have them leading the way as this initiative spreads to councils all around Australia.”

Glenorchy Mayor Sue Hickey said it was a great opportunity for Council to expand on its current programs and activities to build positive pathways through kindness, compassion, empathy and belonging.

“An important focus of Council is to contribute towards building stronger and more resilient local communities,” she said.

“We hope to be able to spark conversations around kindness and connecting with people, as well as offer resources and activities to educate and empower.

“Council is already working extensively with other organisations to address anti-social and criminal behaviour in our City and becoming a b kinder council is another way we can address this.”

Council has committed to five key kindness initiatives, including leading an annual b kinder day event, establishing a designated “kindness space” within Council and adopting a Kindness Commitment Statement.

Council will also host at least one b kinder workshop annually and support a minimum of three local schools per year to become b kinder schools.

“We are looking forward to kicking off our membership by holding a b kinder day event on the front lawns of Council on 13 November which is World Kindness Day,” Mayor Hickey said.

“We are privileged to be able to be a part of the foundation that Billie inspired and continue to work to make our City a welcoming and inclusive place for everyone.”
