Glenorchy City Council is hosting a Basketball Against Racism 3×3 Tournament, aimed at fostering unity and cohesion within the community. The tournament will take place on Wednesday, 13 November 2024, and invites players aged 14 to 17 to come together on the court for a cause that transcends the game. The tournament coincides with World Kindness Day 2024.
Glenorchy is one of the most culturally diverse communities in Tasmania, with one in five people born overseas. Unfortunately, there have been reports of racially motivated incidents affecting business owners and community members.
Glenorchy Mayor Sue Hickey said there was no place for racism in our community.
“With such a culturally diverse community, we are ideally placed to share, enjoy and learn from the many different cultures and traditions that are right here in our city.
“As a community, we will not tolerate the undermining of these opportunities by a small minority that seeks to target difference rather than celebrate it.
“This tournament is about more than just basketball.
“It’s an opportunity for our youth to stand together, break down barriers, and take a firm stance against racial intolerance in our community. Through the spirit of competition and teamwork, we hope to inspire unity and promote a message of respect.”
The Community Development Team also wants to emphasise that support is available for anyone experiencing racial incidents. Resources and assistance will be provided at the event, and attendees will have opportunities to connect with support networks and learn more about services designed to help those affected.
Participants and spectators alike will be encouraged to embrace the core values of the event: respect, understanding, and harmony. The tournament will feature high-energy matches, community speakers, and opportunities for conversation and learning in a safe and inclusive environment.
