Glenorchy City Council is holding a special event to celebrate “Belonging Day” on Thursday, 20 March 2025.
Glenorchy Mayor Sue Hickey said that Belonging Day was a celebration of the kindness, harmony and sense of connection that makes the City of Glenorchy such a special place.
The event will feature a range of service and activity providers with information and fun for the whole community.
“Glenorchy City Council has always prioritised inclusion, cultural and community connectedness, and supporting the most vulnerable among us,” Mayor Hickey said.
“Today, we come together to honour these values and to celebrate the strength of our diverse and caring community.”
Belonging Day coincides with several important initiatives that reinforce the themes of inclusion and community:
- Harmony Week: Celebrating cultural diversity
- Neighbour Day: Encouraging meaningful neighbourhood connections
- International Day of Happiness: Promoting well-being and positivity
- National Playgroup Week: Highlighting the importance of early childhood connections
- Tasmania Reads Week: Fostering literacy and a love for stories
- Neurodiversity Celebration Week: Embracing the unique strengths and perspectives of all individuals
- International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination: Council is joining the other greater Hobart councils Friday 21 March for a joint anti-racism campaign at the “Walk Against Racism” event in Hobart
Mayor Hickey said she was incredibly proud that Glenorchy is the first council in Australia to be recognised as a B Kinder council, highlighting Council’s commitment to fostering kindness and belonging.
“In addition, we have taken a ground-breaking step as the first council in Australia to join Ending Loneliness Together, “she said.
“Chronic loneliness and social isolation are significant challenges that affect many in our community, with 37% of Tasmanians saying that they are lonely. This is why today’s event is so important – it’s a chance to come together, connect, and build a stronger, more caring Glenorchy.”
The event will be held on the Council lawns from 11:30 am-2:00 pm, with the official opening by Mayor Hickey and Acting Anti-Discrimination Commissioner Pia Saturno at 12 noon.
