Happy Mentoring Program

‘Happy mentoring program’ is a diversional program for young people identified by school staff at risk of disengaging from their education, having limited peer connections, or engaging in at-risk behaviours outside of school.

The primary objective of the program is to create an enjoyable school environment while equipping participants with leadership skills. This program targets students in Grade 7 and Grade 8, with approximately 60 students benefitting from it annually.

Glenorchy City Council collaborates with Montrose Bay High and Cosgrove High to deliver this program. Since its inception in 2021, the Happy Mentoring Program has played an instrumental role at Montrose Bay High and expanded to Cosgrove High in 2024.

Background

HAPPY stands for ‘Healthy Active Preventative Programs for Youth’ and was initiated in 2019 by the Local Alcohol and Drug Team (LDAT) to develop programs bringing fun and fitness and education to community spaces such as schools and parks. The Alcohol and Drug Foundation serves as the funding body for this initiative.

Program Facilitation

The Happy Mentoring Program is implemented at both Montrose Bay High and Cosgrove High. On Mondays, sessions are held during Periods 1 and 2 at Montrose Bay High and during Periods 3 and 4 at Cosgrove High. On Fridays, the program takes place during Periods 1 and 2 at Cosgrove High and during Periods 4 and 5 at Montrose Bay High.

There are 7 to 10 students in a group per session. Each group has a session on Monday and Friday for 14 weeks over two terms.

Program Aims

The program aims to increase student engagement and participation in school, foster stronger peer connections, and enhance education about risk-taking behaviours, including substance use. This is achieved through thoughtfully planned, hands-on learning experiences delivered by mentors, which include cooking classes, sports games, team-building exercises, PowerPoint presentations on issues such as vaping, mental health, mood and nutrition and more. These experiences fostered creativity, problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and the development of leadership skills among the students.
